JAMES RIVER CLEAN-UP

Activity: annual clean-up of 42 miles of the James River, including sites in Charles City, Chesterfield, Henrico, Richmond, Goochland, Powhatan and Lynchburg
THE VIRGINIA WATERWAYS CLEAN-UP

Activity: An award winning, statewide, non-profit organization dedicated to citizen stewardship of Virginia's water resources. Every September and October, volunteers across Virginia from the mountains to the oceans gather along the shorelines of rivers, lakes, ponds and bays to pick up trash as part of the Virginia Waterways Cleanup Day (part of the International Coastal Cleanup). They also complete "International Coastal Cleanup Data Cards" from the Ocean Conservancy, helping to collect valuable information about the amounts, types and sources of debris found along Virginia's waterways. CVW's cleanup events educate the public on issues of freshwater and marine pollution, especially the preventable problem of litter.
LOWER APPOMATTOX RIVER CLEAN-UP

Activity: This is a cooperative, regional river cleanup planned for 23 miles along the Lower Appomattox River. Also sponsored by Richard Bland Community College, Virginia State University and the City of Petersburg.

STEWARDSHIP VIRGINIA

Activity: A statewide initiative held twice annually to help citizens with projects that enhance and conserve Virginia's natural and cultural resources. Plan and conduct a volunteer project or event or join an existing one. Their resource guide makes it easy to get great ideas about projects and where to go to get started. Come up with your own unique projects, or call to speak with Bonnie Phillips,the project coordinator for ideas and guidance.
