Did you know that CVWMA collects and
recycles old propane tanks?
Residents can dispose of old and unwanted
tanks at fourteen municipal solid waste collection centers around
the region.

In May of this year, CVWMA staff noticed
something interesting about propane tank recycling. The numbers of
tanks recycled at solid waste centers increased dramatically - 542
in May compared to 109 in April. CVWMA staff thinks this was caused
by Memorial Day picnics and the start of grilling season. Outdoor
cooks throughout the region appeared to recycle their old tanks and
purchase new ones in preparation for holiday cookouts.
Although the tanks can be refilled, after
several summers they begin to look poor and some folks want a fresh
one. The tanks left for recycling will be spruced up for resale if
they are in operable condition, or recycled as scrap metal. More
than 1,800 tanks have been recycled since July 1, 2004.

CVWMA knows that seasonal changes
sometimes impact people's recycling habits. For example, amounts
collected in the curbside and drop-off programs increase in December
and January with the recycling of boxes from holiday gift giving.
These programs may also experience lulls during the summer when
residents spend increased time away from home, either at outside
activities or on vacation. |
