Alkaline Batteries

In years past alkaline batteries (such as regular A, AA, and 9-volt) contained significant levels of mercury, a hazardous heavy metal.  Today, most alkaline batteries contain far less mercury, resulting in less potential for soil and water contamination.  Virginia law permits residents to dispose of small quantities of alkaline batteries in the trash.

There are no local collection programs for alkaline batteries and these batteries are not accepted in CVWMA's recycling programs. If not being able to recycle these batteries bothers you, choose recyclable alternatives such as rechargeable batteries, and use AC adapters when possible.
