Rechargeable Batteries
Using rechargeable batteries saves
money and reduces waste. When these batteries have
reached the end of their extended lifespans, residents may recycle
them at a variety of locations throughout Central
Virginia.
Initiated by the Rechargeable Battery Recycling
Corporation (RBRC), this national program was established to
recover and recycle nickel-cadmium rechargeable batteries such as
those found in cordless appliances (including phones), laptop
computers, cordless power tools and camcorders. It has
been expanded to include nickel-metal hydride, lithium ion, and
small (less than 2.2 pounds) sealed lead acid batteries.
Now all small rechargeable batteries
sold in the U.S. can be recycled.
Local governments and some retailers
collect these rechargeable batteries at various sites through
Central Virginia. The RBRC also continues to work with local
electronics retailers such as Radio Shack and Circuit City or home
improvement centers such as Home Depot to collect old batteries
from consumers at the point-of-purchase.
