The Recycled Gift Guide

No ties, sweaters, ornaments or socks as gifts this year! Our family is buying recycled items and we have found a lot of amazing products exist that are made out of something else. These are just a few of the companies we found that are committed to the environment by making these unique and fun products.

Abundant Earth has hundreds of products including hemp bags, furniture and health products, but my favorites are the adorable tire swings are made from recycled tires and artfully shaped into various figures—anything from Gad-Ziller to a Motorcycle!

Acorn Designs has a variety of note cards, bookmarks, stationary and notebooks made out of recycled paper.

Amazing Recycled Products has a ton of recycled gifts too. The sun catchers made out of recycled glass were a big hit for our family. Designs include lady bugs, smiley faces, winter scenes, the colors are beautiful and the prices are great. We also ordered recycled crayons formed into animal shapes that come with recycled paper note pads.

Eco-artware.com offers hand-crafted items that are made from recycled, reused and natural materials. The company is worth checking out just to see the pure ingenuity. Jewelry is made out of coins, typewriter keys, sea glass and even vinyl records. Home and office accessories can be made out of road signs.

Green Glass is a company that makes goblets and tumblers out of wine bottles. The bottle is separated into two pieces. The bottom becomes a tumbler. The mouth of the bottle is then melted and flattened to form the stem of the new goblet. Quite innovative! The glasses have cool designs etched onto them and you can even custom order your own design (say a company’s logo) onto the glass.

Little Earth claims they introduced the idea of ecofashion with their license plate purses and bottle cap belts. We have to admit—these items are very trendy!

Planet Reworks is an online company out of Richmond, VA that offers a variety of recycled gifts. Our favorite –the messenger bag (or diaper bag) made out of a bill board, touted as being very durable—I believe it!

Vulcana makes bags, briefcases, wallets, purses and day timers out of recycled tires. The bags look like leather!

CVWMA Reminders About Holiday Recycling

• Recycle Your Tree! Visit the CVWMA website, www.cvwma.com, for helpful advice about disposing of Christmas trees. The website will feature this information specific to each locality closer to the end of the month.

• Please do not include gift wrap or styrofoam with curbside recycling. These items should go in your trash.

• Cardboard boxes need to be flattened and should be no larger than 2 x 3 feet. (You can cut boxes down to the appropriate size using box cutters.) Flattening the boxes to conserve space in the collection trucks. This helps conserve resources (fuel and air pollution) by reducing trips back to the recycling facility.

• Don't cover your recyclables in inclement weather

• Because Christmas and New Years both fall on Mondays this year, Curbside Recycling collections will be delayed one day all week long.
